Monoclonal antibody K2-1B12 is highly specific for inflammation-inducing lactoferrin-peptide derived by enzymatic cleavage of lactoferrin. Cleavage of human lactoferrin by elastase and/or proteinase 3 (PR3) leads to release of inflammation-inducing lactoferrin-peptide (amino acids 295-306). Inflammation-inducing lactoferrin-peptide could be detected in the saliva and milk, respectively, of periodontitis and mastitis patients. Moreover, this peptide activates the NFκB and induces pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines.
